Is Location Casting for Major Roles?
Most notable actors are part of the ensemble cast and are cast in LA or New York. Here's how location casting really works on major film and television projects.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from actors outside of Los Angeles and New York is that location casting will be their big break into major roles. I understand the hope. If a production is shooting in your hometown, it feels like the opportunity of a lifetime. But the reality of how major roles are cast is more strategic than most people realize.
Major roles are cast in the major markets
For lead and supporting roles — the names that appear above the title or carry significant storylines — casting usually happens in Los Angeles or New York. That's where the agencies, managers, and established talent pools are concentrated. Directors and producers want to see known quantities or actors with strong reputations, and those reputations are built in the industry's central hubs.
What location casting actually does
Location casting is essential, but it primarily handles the ensemble, day players, background, and region-specific roles that give a project authenticity. If a film is set in Atlanta, the location casting director will find the local faces that make the city feel real. They will cast the waitress, the neighbor, the courthouse reporter. These roles matter. They breathe life into the world. But they are rarely the leads.
- Leads and major supporting roles: usually cast in LA or NY
- Day players and featured background: often cast locally
- Roles requiring specific regional authenticity: handled on location
- Notable actors in ensemble casts: typically attached before travel
Exceptions exist, but they're exceptions
Yes, sometimes a local actor lands a major role. Sometimes a director specifically wants an unknown face. Sometimes a project is fully cast regionally to save money. But those situations are not the norm, and banking on them as a career strategy is risky. If your goal is to book leads in film and television, the most reliable path still leads through the major markets — with training, representation, and visibility.
Location casting builds the world. The major markets still cast the stars who inhabit it.
