How a Good Cup of Tea Can Change the Mood of a Casting Room
After 25 years behind the casting table, I've learned that the smallest rituals can calm the biggest nerves — starting with tea.

People think casting rooms are all bright lights and fast decisions. The truth is they are filled with nerves — actors carrying hope, assistants juggling schedules, and directors trying to see the future in a two-minute read. After 25 years in casting and 10 as an executive producer, I have learned that the energy of the room matters just as much as the talent walking into it.
Tea as a reset button
There is something about offering someone a warm cup of tea that changes the temperature of a room. It slows the breath. It softens the shoulders. I have seen actors walk in tight with anxiety, take a sip, and suddenly remember how to be human. That's the moment I am looking for — not perfection, but presence.
My casting room staples
- Chamomile for early morning calls when everyone is still waking up
- Peppermint for long afternoons when energy dips
- Ginger for warming the voice before cold reads
- Unbothered AM blend for grounding before big scenes
It's not about the tea
The tea itself is simple. What matters is the gesture — someone being seen, being offered a moment of calm before they perform. That is the same energy I bring to my wellness work. Whether I am casting a lead or sharing a plant-based meal idea, the goal is the same: help people feel like themselves.
A calm actor gives a better audition. A calm room finds better actors. Sometimes it starts with a cup of tea.
